Kotak Mahindra Bank serves the global-Indian wallet through a bank-led offshore stack rather than a poached diaspora private-banking desk: an IFSC Banking Unit at GIFT City (set up May 2016) offering foreign-currency deposits, loans and treasury, and a DIFC branch in Dubai — its first overseas branch — that is a Category 1 firm offering wealth management to a global customer base, alongside group offices in London, New York, Abu Dhabi, Mauritius and Singapore. Its domestic Kotak Private arm, led by Oisharya Das, runs the UHNI/HNI franchise and an established non-resident business. In June 2026 Kotak agreed to acquire Deutsche Bank's India retail, affluent private banking and wealth business (~₹10,500 crore AUM, ~150,000 customers) for about ₹281.7 crore — the onshore counterpart to Deutsche's offshore-NRI pivot.
Why it matters
Kotak sits on the receiving end of the corridor's dominant trade: as foreign banks (UBS, Deutsche) sell India onshore to concentrate on NRIs booked in Dubai and Singapore, Kotak buys the onshore franchises and books the NRI relationship from GIFT City and its DIFC branch instead of a Swiss or Singaporean balance sheet. Its offshore footprint is infrastructure-first — an IFSC unit and a Dubai branch — rather than a poached diaspora private-banking bench, which is cheaper to retain and lower-touch than the UHNW desks its sellers keep. The Deutsche deal is the clearest signal: Kotak is consolidating the onshore India wealth its global rivals are exiting.

The journey
Kotak buys Deutsche Bank's India retail, affluent private banking and wealth business
Kotak Mahindra Bank agreed to acquire Deutsche Bank's India retail banking, affluent private banking and wealth management business — ~₹29,000 crore of loans, ₹16,000 crore of deposits, ₹10,500 crore of AUM, ~150,000 customers and ~1,000 employees — for about ₹281.7 crore all-cash on a slump-sale basis, expected to close by September 2027. CEO Ashok Vaswani framed it as a fit with Kotak's affluent and SME focus; the deal consolidates onshore India wealth that Deutsche is exiting to concentrate on NRI UHNW clients offshore.
Kotak founder Uday Kotak named Chairman of GIFT City — the offshore-in-India hub the corridor books through
On 13 February 2026 the Government of Gujarat appointed Kotak Mahindra Bank founder Uday Suresh Kotak as Chairman of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Co. Ltd (GIFT City), succeeding Hasmukh Adhia. The role hands the architect of India's largest private bank the chair of the IFSC that Kotak — and the rival banks racing to book NRI dollars onshore — use as the offshore-in-India gateway. Uday Kotak stepped down as the bank's MD & CEO on 1 September 2023 but remains its founder and a director.

Kotak Private — the arm that runs its non-resident franchise — launches India's first luxury index
On 26 November 2025 Kotak Private Banking, led by CEO Oisharya Das, launched the Kotak Private Luxury Index (KPLI) with EY — a price index across 12 categories of luxury products and experiences — which read 122 in 2025, up 22% from its 2022 baseline. The launch is a brand signal from the UHNI/HNI franchise that also books Kotak's established non-resident business, underlining that Kotak anchors its global-Indian relationships through an onshore private bank rather than a poached offshore diaspora desk.
Kotak launches its first overseas branch at DIFC Dubai — pitched at the 'Indian global diaspora'
On 22 October 2019 Kotak Mahindra Bank launched its very first overseas branch at the Dubai International Financial Centre — roughly three years after the November 2016 RBI approval — as a Category 1, DFSA-regulated branch that can accept offshore deposits from professional clients based outside the UAE and arrange/advise on offshore credit and investments, complementing its GIFT City IBU. Kotak framed DIFC as a way to offer world-class services to 'the large Indian global diaspora'; its Dubai Representative Office already promoted India-based NRI products (NRE/NRO accounts and deposits, home and auto loans), and the group traces its UAE presence to a first Dubai office in the mid-1990s.
