Goldman Sachs serves Indian-origin UHNW wealth purely offshore and names it openly: its Private Wealth Management Singapore page states the office manages 'offshore wealth for Chinese and non-resident Indian clients' — the clearest public NRI statement of any US bank. But that is where the commitment stops. Goldman never built an onshore private-wealth business in India (its India footprint is institutional and technology — it has deployed over $7bn of capital there since 2006 — not private wealth), and unlike Citi, HSBC, StanChart or the Swiss majors it has made no dedicated NRI desk hire or franchise build visible in 2024-2026. The diaspora ambition is real at the leadership level — chairman David Solomon led the board's first India meeting in over a decade in June 2023, and India CEO Sonjoy Chatterjee flagged an 'increasing opportunity to target the nation's wealthy diaspora' from Singapore, London and Dubai in December 2023 — but it has not yet been institutionalised into a coverage team the way rivals have.
Why it matters
Goldman is the white-space case study of the NRI corridor: it has the clearest public claim on the segment — 'non-resident Indian clients' printed on its own PWM site — and the strongest India board-level commitment, yet it has done none of the desk-building its peers have. While Citi, HSBC, StanChart, UBS, Julius Baer and Deutsche were hiring named NRI/Global-India desk heads through 2024-2026, no equivalent Goldman hire or franchise was visible in public sources. The gap between Goldman's stated diaspora opportunity and its lack of dedicated coverage is the single largest unconverted opportunity among the global banks — and a live question of whether Goldman intends to compete for NRI wallet or simply bank it opportunistically out of Singapore.

The journey
PWM Singapore names 'non-resident Indian clients' as a served segment; Dubai does not
Goldman's official Private Wealth Management Singapore page (fetched Aug 2026) states the office serves clients across Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand 'as well as managing offshore wealth for Chinese and non-resident Indian clients', with Jean Paul Churchouse as Region Head for PWM Southeast Asia and Australia. By contrast, the PWM Dubai page describes serving 'families, entrepreneurs, and institutions across the Gulf region' and 'ultra high net worth clients' with no mention of Indian, NRI or South Asian clients — locating Goldman's public NRI language in Singapore, not the Gulf.

India CEO Chatterjee flags a diaspora opportunity served from Singapore, London and Dubai
Sonjoy Chatterjee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Goldman in India, said Goldman 'sees an increasing opportunity to target the nation's wealthy diaspora as global investors shift their focus from China.' Reporting on the same remarks placed the coverage geography offshore, noting a 'more prominent opportunity to serve such clients from offices in Singapore, London, and Dubai' as many Indian wealth-industry entrepreneurs relocated overseas during the pandemic.

Goldman's board holds its first India meeting in more than a decade; Modi hosts it in New Delhi
The full 12-member Goldman Sachs board visited India — its first board meeting in the country in over ten years — with Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting board members and key leadership in New Delhi. The trip signalled a top-of-house India commitment, though the substance disclosed around it (credit business, capital deployment) was institutional rather than private wealth.
